If you don’t know what you want.
If you don’t have any goals, where do you start?
It’s commonly said: ‘start with a clear vision of what you want’.
This is good advice, but what about for those that don’t know what it is they want? All they know is they don’t want THIS.
They just want a better life.
If you want a better life: just start improving the things around you.
If you want a better life, make things better.
I love Jordan Petersons perspective on this, that you don’t recognize chaos until you have some order to compare it to.
You might not know that your family life is chaotic if it’s all you’ve ever known. That your neighborhood or environment is chaotic, if it’s all you’ve ever seen.
Once you see the comparison, you can’t unsee it.
Start improving the smallest things around you.
Make your bed. Clean your room. Sweep the floor.
Fold your clothes as perfectly as you can.
Organize your cupboards. Clean your fridge. Purge your clutter.
Clean your car. Clean your yard. Cut your grass.
Once you start organizing the little things then maybe it will spread to bigger things.
Organize your finances. Balance your checkbook. Examine your recent transactions, see where there’s waste.
See where you can save by cutting thoughtless expenses. Even if the smallest amount.
Start saving money. Build financial projections of where you’ll be in a month, a year, 3 years.
With this structure maybe you will have the freedom to explore more options.
Maybe with a strong foundation you can finally think about what it is you actually want to build.
For anyone thinking: “What’s the point?”
The answer is: To feel better.
A better life makes you feel good.
And isn’t that what we’re really after?
